Share the love with your friends

Weather was dry on Friday (makes a change for the UK as it just rains and rains!!) so cycled to Kew Gardens which is about 4 miles from me cycling by the river.
This is the Palm House
So I decided to do a little series by request from MarcieH to learn more on distressing papers and elements.
If you are a member of the DDS Artist Studio, you have a downloadable and printable PDF of this tutorial.  And if you are also a member of DDS Designer's Studio, will have some free CU creased papers uploaded soon to use. You have to be logged in to see these private forums.

I'm not sure how others do it, but I like to be as realistic as possible with my digital art so I will walk you through how I do it.

I start with a really good scan of a paper, cardstock and I have even done with fabric also for a totally different look, that has been creased and folded and then laid flat.  I like to do several on one sheet and the corners also.  I will scan at a very high resolution like 600 ppi.  Why? Because I like to create large and save to a standard size after for highest quality.  This is especially useful when you have a limited size scanner and want a 12" crease across your paper or a diagonal one which is longer.
Tip:  Paper bags work very well for this! Also the thicker your paper you scan, the deeper the creasing will look.

If you don't want to scan right now, you can use a solid colored creased paper in your stash for the lesson for now.

Open your scanned paper.
Desaturate.  Image>Adjustments>Desaturate  (Shift+Cmd/Cntl+U)
I also will sometimes play with Levels to get a good contrast that will blend very nicely later.
Make sure you try different papers, textures and materials.  Once you do one, you will see how easy these are to create.
Here is a partial of a sheet scanned in.  I am wanting the crease across the section and also will extract the crease across the bottom left corner.

We are going to grab Lasso Tool (L).
In the tool options box in the top menu, set your feather to 20 pixels. This makes it easier for blending when you use it later.
Start close to the outside of the crease and click as you go to create an outline around the section.  I seem to always start off my art board to the left and work clockwise click as I go so I don't have too straight of lines.
When you get near where you started you will see a small circle appear near your mouse pointer.  Click now to close your selection.

Here is what mine looks like with it selected.

Now copy from the layer.  Cmd/Cntl J
Now you can either drag to a new file, trim and save to a png file OR
Turn off your background layer, trim and Save As.  Undo back to when you have your original file and do your next crease.

To use your new crease on a paper:
Open a paper, place the crease on the layer above and change the blending mode of the crease layer.  Play with the different blending modes, but I prefer soft light and duplicate some times to get a more defined crease.  It will all depend on the paper you are blending this in to.
Here's a paper from my Tween Years kit I applied my crease to.
These are using the Overlay blending and I also decreased my fill to about 60% opacity on the crease layer. Same crease used, just one is rotated off the corner. Looks pretty darn real to me!

To use on an element:
Do as the same as you would for a paper, but clip it to your element layer.
Arrange as you would like and play with the blending mode of the layer.
Here I've done it on one of my Flutters from my latest kit Altered Art - Flutters.
I added a drop shadow and warped it and now my flat butterfly looks like it's been folded up slightly.
For this particular element, I used Soft Light blending mode and duplicated for a darker deeper crease.

Hope you enjoyed your little mini tutorial today and watch for more distressing ideas to come.

We have some exciting changes here at DDS . . . some that have already happened and some that we are still transitioning into. While we have chosen to close the Shop portion of DDS, your favorite designers will continue to sell their designs at other stores.  See the bottom of this post for links and information on where to find them.

The great news is that the DDS website is not going away – in fact, it's getting better! We are morphing into a new structure and format. It has always been Cilenia's dream to teach and share her creative passions and that's what she'll be doing! She will be offering tutorials and classes that teach creativity and art, along with intermediate and advanced computer drawing skills.  Cilenia will soon be offering some Photoshop training along with the team at the Digitals site, where she'll also be selling her designs. She will also share her popular technique mini-tutorials there.  Watch her personal site at CileniaCurtis.com for more information on when that will begin.

Here at DDS, we will be picking up where those tutorials and training opportunities end, offering further instruction for those who want to expand their learning even more.  Our tutorials and courses will be focused on the artist who wants to climb out of their box and grow!
Cilenia and her brother Christopher will be teaming up to present advanced techniques to apply and create in Photoshop, Art Rage and a few other computer aided design programs.  Cilenia and Christopher have been drawing on the computer since 1986 (that's 25 years!) and are going to combine their experience and skills to bring you some awesome classes!

As part of the transition, the DDS forums and galleries will be private after June 1st so that we can keep the forums manageable for members and class participants. All current members will continue to have access. If you're not a current member, you can request access by contacting Cilenia.  The private forums will include our Artist's Studio Forum, where members can ask and answer questions and share resources with each other.  All creative scrappers and designers are welcome!  Just send Cilenia a request to join.  But know that Cilenia and her team will also be at Digitals forums sharing as always too.

Later this year we plan to offer a paid subscription area (the Designers' Studio) that will offer monthly advanced tutorials and exclusive free downloads of Commercial Use products which will not be sold anywhere else. This will be a place for you to learn and grow as a designer.  Cilenia has years of experience mentoring other designers, and has used this Designers' Studio concept to teach and support the current DDS design team. It has been hugely successful and she has had many requests to open it up to the public. Watch here for more news about expanding the Designers' Studio to the public as a paid subscription.

So where do you find your favorite designers now?

Cilenia, Honey Scraps, Betty Jo and Lilly St. Studios can all be found EXCLUSIVELY at Digitals, with their awesome owner Stacey Mann and their very supportive team.

Digitals has been up and running now for almost 7 years with the same owner and has a proven record in quality and customer service!  Please join us there as we will continue to be sharing our inspirations, musings, tips and tricks and more!

Kara and Senovia will continue to design and collaborating with Cilenia at Digitals.

Teresa will be opening her shop at Scrapable as of July 1st.

Aria has chosen to take a few months off designing but hopes to join us again later this year.

The Shop portion of DDS will formally close on May 31st so all orders will need to be completed and downloaded by then. Thank you for your business and your friendship.

The DDS Team.
